What Is Keratin Treatment?

Before starting with the treatment let’s know what is keratin? Keratin is a naturally occurring protein that forms 91% of our hairs. It is a family of fibrous structural proteins, and the key structural material that makes up hair, nails, and the outer layer of your skin. Over time with damage and chemicals the keratin content of our hairs reduce making them dry and unmanageable.

Now, back to the treatment. A keratin treatment is basically a treatment that provides a layer of keratin to your hairs making them frizz-free and smooth.

What Is The Process For Keratin Treatment?

It starts with washing your hairs (if you haven’t already washed them) to get rid of any oils or product residue. Once the hairs are shampooed, the hair stylist will either apply the keratin treatment to your wet hair or he/she will blow dry your hair and then apply the formula, it all depends on the hairstylist and your requirement.

Finally, the hairstylist will flat iron the coarse strands where the treatment needs to be sealed in.

What Are The Different Types Of Keratin Treatments?

There are different types of Keratin treatments available. So, ask your hairstylist for what option he/she has.

1. Brazilian Blowout

This is one of the earliest and conventional keratin treatment. Developed in Brazil in 2005, this one is a bit expensive. Apart from giving your hairs a protective layer it also alters the texture of your hair. It is ideal for those with very curly hairs that are highly susceptible to humidity. Most Brazilian treatments don’t contain formaldehyde but ask your stylist before choosing the treatment. This treatment lasts up to three months.

2. Cezanne Classic

This is a good choice as it is the most natural and formaldehyde-conscious keratin treatment. This treatment should be used by those with fine hair as it also nourishes the hairs. This product does not alter the hair texture. According to the CEO of the company that manufactures the product, it does not break the disulphide bonds in hairs. However, if you have coloured hair this is not suitable for you hairs as it can ruin the colour.

3. Trisolla and Trisolla Plus

This is the quickest to apply and is ideal for those with thick hair and damaged or coloured hairs. The treatment doesn't ruin hair colour, makes hair smooth, and stays the same even in hot and humid weather.

4. Keratin express

It is a short treatment and lasts only for 6 weeks. Keratin is applied in serum form. It typically makes your hair more manageable and is ideal for wavy or straight hair that turns frizzy in humidity.

5. Japzilian Keratin

This is great if you need long lasting results, its result last five months longer than Brazilian blowout. It combines Brazilian keratin treatment with Japanese hair straightening system. First, Brazilian treatment is used to loosen the curls and then Japanese treatment is used to seal the cuticle and locks out frizz.

6. Goldwell Kerasilk

This process takes a lot of time somewhere around 3-4 hours. This treatment makes your hair easier to style, and the effects last up to two months.

These are just some of the popular treatment, there may be some other products available with your hairstylist. Talk to the hairstylist and know which treatments the salon offers and which is best for your hair texture.

How To Choose a Treatment?

There are two types of products you can choose to treat your hairs. There are products that contain formaldehyde and those that are formaldehyde-free. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen, even though the amount of formaldehyde used in keratin hair treatment is very less, it’s better to opt for formaldehyde-free treatments.

Most treatments, nowadays, use glyoxylic acid and are 100% free of formaldehyde. The only problem with formaldehyde-free treatments is that they don’t last very long. However, they are safer and much more effective in treating your hairs.

Talking to your hairstylist will give you further clarity on which product is suitable for you.

How Long Does It Take?

The time your treatment will take depends on the formula the stylist is using, your hair texture, the length and the volume of your hair. Expect anywhere from two to four hours.

How long the treatment lasts depends on the treatment taken and the frequency with which you wash your hairs. Typically, a treatment can last from three months to six months. Ask your hairstylist about how long the treatment you have chosen will last and what can you do to make it last longer.

Who Should Avoid This Treatment?

People with fine, thin texture, straight hair, or smooth hairs should avoid the treatment. If you have curls and love them, keratin will soften your curls and can pull out the waves. Keratin treatments are also not recommended for pregnant women due to the presence of formaldehyde.

How Much Will It Cost?

Depending on the hair and length salon, a keratin treatment can cost between Rs 4,000 and Rs 8,000 in India. Outside India, it can cost on average somewhere around $500.

1. Moisture results in losing the protein treatment layer. Avoid washing your hair for at least three days after the treatment, if you don’t want to end up having frizzy hairs again. Avoid washing your hairs, swimming, or doing any intense physical exercise.

2. Keratin is initially malleable putting your hair up in a ponytail or bun or braiding or even clipping them back can leave dents in your straight hairs. So keep your hairs open for a few days after the treatment.

3. Use hair care products that are free from sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate. These chemicals can strip your hair off the keratin, causing the treatment to wear off early.

4. Use sulfate-free and paraben-free shampoos and conditioners.
