How To Eat Healthy Even At Parties

How To Eat Healthy Even At Parties

It can get really tricky being on a diet and trying to eat healthy while you also have to attend a party. Even I try to eat healthy throughout the week but when it comes to the weekend either there is a party or a family get together.

If skipping such events was an option, then nothing would have been better but most of the times these are social obligations and you cannot do anything about them.

But you still want to eat healthy, Right?

You worked hard through the week, your diet was going great. You don’t want all that effort to go to waste just for one night.

So, what can you do about it?

First of all, Relax !!! If you were actually following a healthy diet throughout the week, indulging in some ‘not so healthy’ food once in that week won’t make much of a difference but if you are going to make that one meal count for the total calories you took throughout the week then my friend it is a problem !!!

You might have a strong willpower and even a whole buffet spread out in front of you can’t make you give in but what if the host/hostess keeps on requesting you to try something or the other? Most people end up giving in to the social obligation and those who don’t end up spoil the mood of everyone around.

But don’t worry there are still ways you can break through this party trap without being the mood spoiler for everyone. However, before I start giving you the tips, make sure you eat a healthy diet throughout the week.

Make A Game Plan

You need to have a rough plan before you go to the party. Don’t just go there and then start thinking “what do I do now? What should I eat?“ Chances are you might not be able to decide and end up eating a lot more than what you would have actually planned.

Think of what options could be better than others? Do you want to skip the dessert or not? Do you want your host to know about your diet or not? Maybe your host could arrange a few healthy options for you.

Hit The Gym

I am not asking you to go to the gym because this is going to burn off the calories you will eat at the party. No !! you won’t be able to burn off all those calories in one session. However, it is a fact that people who work out regularly are more conscious about their diet. Exercising puts you in a good mindset and will motivate you to stay on track even at a party.

Take Your Own Food

If you have the option to take your own food to the party, do that. You can offer the host to bring a dish along. But don’t ask him/her what should you get. Just say that you are going to bring along something. Now you can customise the dish to make it healthy and tasty according to you.

Eat Before You Go

This is one of the most common advice that you will find on the internet. Don’t go on an empty stomach to a party. Chances are if you are feeling hungry you will end up overeating and eating high-calorie food. If you have already eaten something you will eat the lower calorie options.

Drink Lots Of Liquid

Before you start eating head to the beverage section. Start with water or a low-calorie beverage. Don’t go for sweetened drinks or mocktails. Also, do not start with alcohol on an empty stomach. Drink plenty of water. This will make you feel full and reduce the amount of food you will eat later on.

Pick Up A Small Plate

Studies have shown that eating on a smaller plate makes you eat less. When your brain sees a plate full of food it will automatically feel there is a lot of food. If you opt for a bigger plate the empty spaces will make your brain feel you took less food and you will have a urge to fill up your plate.

Load On Salad And Fruits

Before you start with anything, grab a plate full of salad, fruits, and vegetables. These are naturally low-calorie options and you can eat loads of them. They will make you full and then you have an excuse that you already ate so much, so now you can reduce your quantity of the high-calorie options.

Scan The Food Option

Before you put anything on your plate have a look at all the options available. There might not be healthy or diet food but some foods will certainly be better than others. For example, try picking up roasted or grilled options over deep fried ones. Search for low-calorie options, even if there are none choose the healthiest among the high-calorie ones, such as, go for the high protein foods rather than grain-based ones.

Get Involved In The Activities

If your host has planned some activity for the party. Quietly move towards the activity area or you could suggest some activities yourself to make the party more lively and plan those activities away from the food area.

Choose The Low-Calorie Alcohol

If the party has alcohol the best option is to avoid them. But if you can’t do that then go for the low-calorie options.

Beer and wines are not a good option, they are high in calorie so avoid them. You should go for the classic spirits such as vodka, rum, gin, whiskey, etc and don’t mix them with sugary drinks or soda. Add water or go on the rocks!!! Also, have plenty of water while having alcohol. Your water intake should be twice your alcohol intake to avoid dehydration.

Serve Yourself

Do not wait for the host to serve you because then you will have no control over the food and quantity you are going to eat. Get up and serve yourself and keep a tab on the portion size.

Recover From the Party

If you couldn’t control yourself and overindulged don’t kill yourself over it. Get back on track and hit the gym. Don’t over-restrict yourself and go on an extreme diet the next day because this will have no benefit.

You can’t compensate for the extra calories you ate last night. Just stay focussed and come back to the normal healthy diet you were taking prior to the party. Also, drink loads of water the next day if you overindulged in alcohol or high salt food, this will help avoid dehydration.

So, the next time you go to an event don’t stress about it just recall these simple tips and workout your gameplan.
