How To Get Shiny Nails Naturally

Shiny nails not just make your hands look beautiful but they are a sign of good health too. Most of us get regular manicures thinking that this will make our nails look good but the truth is that this is just a temporary solution, regular use of nail paints makes your nails lose their natural shine and turn to an ugly yellow color.

Even Though you can cover the damage by using nail paints but in this process you are further damaging your nails by not letting them recover from the damage they have already suffered.

These few simple DIY remedies will make your nails shiny and healthy without spending a penny at a spa or on expensive manicures.

1. Olive Oil

Olive oil contains linoleic acid which helps seal in  the moisture and retain your nails shine.

  • Take some olive oil and warm it in a bowl. Remember not too heat it too much, just lukewarm oil is good enough.

  • Now dip your nails in the oil for at least 5 minutes.

  • Take your nails out from the bowl and massage the oil on your nails for 2-3 minutes.

  • Now wash your hands with just water and repeat this remedy daily to see results.

2. Avocado

Avocados have high fat, protein, and nutrients which help restore the nails shine. Avocado oil also has vitamins (A, B, D & E), potassium and antioxidant property.

  • Mash half an avocado and mix it with some rose water.

  • Now apply this paste on your nails and massage for 2-3 minutes.

  • Let the paste stay on your nails for 15-20 minutes.

  • Now wash it off with lukewarm water.

  • Repeat this regularly to fasten the results.

  • You can also massage your nails with avocado oil.

3. Rose Water

Rose water helps to restore the shiny nails and gives them a pink tint.

  • Mix rose water and lemon juice in equal quantity in a bowl.

  • Dip your nails in this mixture for 15 minutes and then wash them with water.

  • Repeat this remedy daily to get clean, healthy, and shiny nails.

4. Lemon Juice and Vinegar

Lemon is a natural astringent and bleaching agent. It helps get rid of any spots on the nails and restore their shine and health.

  • Take 1-2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice.

  • Dip your nails in the juice for 5 minutes.

  • Now take ½ teaspoon of vinegar and mix it with warm water in another bowl.

  • Use a brush or toothbrush dipped in the vinegar solution to scrub your nails.

  • Finally wash your nails with water.

  • Repeat this remedy 4-5 times a month to keep your nails shiny and clean.

  • If you have dry skin you can add water or olive oil to the lemon juice to dilute it.

5. Milk

Milk is again a good cleansing and moisturizing agent.

  • Pour some warm milk in a bowl and dip your nails in it for 5-10 minutes.

  • Wash your hands with water and moisturize them.

  • Repeat this regularly.

6. Petroleum Jelly

  • Massage your nails with petroleum jelly at least two times a day after bathing and before sleeping.

  • Repeat this remedy every day twice.

7. Cucumber

  • Rub your nails with cucumber slices whenever you get the time.

  • Repeat this daily to see your nails shine again.

8. Butter

Butter contains nutrients such as vitamins A, B and E, potassium, sodium, calcium, zinc, iron and magnesium, all of which help to make your nails shine.

  • Simply massage your nails and cuticles with butter for 5-10 minutes.

  • Wash your hands with warm water.

  • Repeat this daily to see quick results.

9. Coconut Oil

Just like olive oil coconut oil is another good option for moisturizing your nails.

  • Massage your nails with a few drops of warm coconut oil for a few minutes.

  • Let it stay for 15-20 minutes.

  • Now wash your hands with warm water.

10. Improve Your Diet

As I already mentioned nails are an indicator of your health. A good wholesome diet is naturally going to improve your health and nails.

  • Drink lots of water. Drinking water removes toxins from the body which leads to a glowing skin and shining nails.

  • Black currant seed oil contains linolenic acid just like olive oil. It can be used to treat dry and cracked nails. This oil also has flavonoids and vitamin C that can make the nails shiny. You can take it daily for improving nails. Consult your doctor before including this in your diet.

  • Yogurt contains proteins, zinc, vitamin A, B, C, D, K, folate, calcium, iron. Consume yogurt daily once or twice.

  • Include foods rich in hydrochloric acid in your diet. The acid helps to break down the food easily and ensures better absorption of nutrients. A nutrient rich diet will ensure better nails. So, include leafy vegetables like kale, barley grass, spinach, or celery, black olives, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice or any other citrus juices in your diet.

  • Include protein rich foods in your diet. Foods such as eggs, beans, pork, dairy products, fish, chicken, vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, watercress, sweet corn, spinach, Brussels sprouts, etc.) are high in protein or just grab a protein shake to increase the keratin protein which keeps your nails and hair healthy.

  • Include fish oil in your diet. Omega – 3 fatty acids in fish oil help to lubricate and moisture the nails and keep them shiny.

  • Biotin (B – complex vitamin) improve the keratin infrastructure and keep your nails and hair shiny. Consume biotin-rich foods like almonds, carrots, eggs, peanuts, salmon, tomatoes, bananas, mushrooms, etc.

  • Gamma – linolenic acid (GLA) also helps to restore the natural shine of your nails. Consume 500 mg of black seed oil or evening primrose oil twice daily.

  • Consuming foods rich in vitamin E like nuts, corn, eggs, cucumber, tofu, spinach, avocados, broccoli, etc. improves nail health and prevents breakage.

Other Tips and Suggestions

  • Continuous use of nail polishes can make your nails dull and cracked. Give them some time to breathe and let them stay polish free once in a while.

  • Use good quality acetone-free nail polish to avoid damaging your nails with the harsh chemicals.

  • Wear gloves while doing the dishes or washing clothes.

  • Just like your face your nails and hands too need exfoliation. Scrub your hands once a week using a toothbrush and some whitening toothpaste.
