How to Stop Facial Sweating From Ruining Your Makeup

Do you sweat excessively from your face? Is facial sweating ruining your makeup and the only reason you buy waterproof products is because you sweat a lot?

Sweating is a natural phenomenon that takes place to maintain body temperature. However, some people might experience excessive sweating from the face, head, and scalp. This could become a source of embarrassment when going out. Most people are unaware but they could be suffering from a medical condition called Hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis means sweating more than necessary to maintain normal body temperature. It can range in severity from feeling a damp face to sweat droplets dripping from your face. If you find that your face and head are extremely sweaty on a regular basis even when you are not hot, stressed, exercising, or eating spicy food, you may be experiencing this condition.

Although there is no sure shot medical treatment for this but changing the products you use, your eating habits, lifestyle, and using some natural remedies can make a huge difference.

1. Using An Astringent Containing Tannic Acid

Acids such as tannic acid and trichloroacetic acid have all been used to treat hyperhidrosis. These agents denature the keratin proteins in the layer lining the sweat pore, which leads to a superficial closure of the pore for some time.

Start by washing your face and applying a tannin acid containing astringent using a cotton ball. Don’t leave out your temples and forehead near the hairline that’s where most sweating occurs. After applying the astringent continue your makeup and skincare routine as usual. You can use the astringent twice, in the morning and in the evening. However, if you start experiencing any irritation discontinue using it.

2. Reduce Stress And Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are a major cause of excessive sweating. Cutting down on anxiety can help reduce excessive sweat. Engage yourself in some relaxation techniques to manage stress. You could start with meditation, yoga, or breathing exercises.

3. Using Oil-free Face Wash And Moisturiser

Use oil-free products to cleanse and moisturise your skin. Avoiding oil on your face is important for the makeup to stay longer. The oils in makeup can react with oils left on your skin and this might result in your makeup coming off too soon. Also, ensure the product matches your skin type and is a light-weight formula.

4. Use a Primer Before Makeup

Using a primer prepares your skin for makeup. Applying primer before starting your makeup routine ensures that the makeup stays on for long. Start by applying from your nose and then spread outwards till your entire face is covered.

5. Use Setting Powder After Makeup

Complete your makeup with a setting powder and spray. Applying the setting powder first and then the spray. Choose a alcohol-free spray as alcohol can dry out your makeup and cause cracks.

Always carry the setting powder with you, whenever you start feeling too sweaty quickly run to the loo, dab away the sweat using a tissue, touch-up your makeup if necessary, and apply the setting powder again. You can do this several times without having to remove your makeup. But don’t touch up or apply the setting powder without dabbing away the sweat, as this can make you look cakey.

6. Change Your Diet

Most health and skin problems are a reflection of your diet. Improving your diet is the holistic approach to a better body, mind, and skin. Before you start seeking medical help, give a thought about changing your diet.

6.1) Stay Hydrated

Your body sweats to maintain it’s usual temperature. If you don’t stay hydrated your body will sweat more to keep itself cool. So, start drinking enough water and don’t give your body a hard time cooling down.

6.2) Reduce Caffeine

Caffeine promotes adrenaline rush which puts your body in the “fight or flight” mode i.e. in an emergency situation. Your heart rate goes up, blood pressure rises, and for a few hours, you feel pumped up and unstoppable.

People often drink coffee before a workout and in the morning to get these superpowers. However, if you sweat too much, avoiding caffeine is the right way to go. Caffeine leads to excessive sweating, and it can make your sweat smell worse. Skip the coffee, soda, and caffeinated tea to stay dry or you could opt for the decaffeinated ones.

6.3) Reduce Alcohol

Alcohol increases heart rate and dilates the blood vessels which further increases the body temperature and cause more sweating than normal.

6.4) Avoid High Carbs, Junk And Processed Food

Low carb and Keto diets can be very effective at treating facial sweating or excessive sweating in any other area. You are what you eat, if your diet includes a lot of processed foods all the chemical toxins and compounds in those foods will trigger more sweating. Include more fresh, organic, and unrefined whole-grains in your diet.

6.5) Reduce Spicy Food

Spicy foods are also responsible for more sweating and making your sweat smell bad. Spicy foods trick the body into thinking temperatures are rising and you end up sweating more. Hot foods, like coffee or soup, increase core body temperature and promote sweating. Cut out spicy foods from your diet to stay sweat-free. Stay away from peppers even black pepper and other spicy sauces and include seasoned herbs like basil, thyme, or rosemary.

6.6) Balance The Salt Intake

Sodium helps to control the water level in the body. Taking in too much or too little salt can be detrimental to your health. Sweat contains sodium, so sweating too little or too much might affect the levels of sodium present in the body.

7. Use Home Remedies

7.1) Green Gram Dal

Green gram dal is not just good for your stomach but your face too. Simply ground up some of the legume and ad some milk to make a paste. Apply this on your face daily to see the difference.

7.2) Cucumber

Cucumber is a natural coolant. It soothes the skin and has an anti-inflammatory effect. Cucumber is used to cure a number of facial issues, including facial sweating. Simply juice up a fresh cucumber or use it sliced on your face to keep it cool and sweat-free for hours.

7.3) Ice

Place ice in a clean, soft cloth for rubbing your face or use an ice cube directly. This helps reduce sweating and puffiness by tightening the pores. The cooling effect on the face can shut down sweat production.

7.4) Talcum Powder

Talcum powder soaks up excess moisture and sweat and makes the sweat glands less active. Some talcum powders may contain asbestos, a carcinogen. Talcum powder can easily get into the lungs, which can be detrimental. Use this product with caution.

7.5) Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has astringent properties which help remove bacteria, close up pores, and control sweating.  It also works as an antiperspirant ensuring the pores stay tight. It helps regulate blood sugar, flush out toxins, relieve heartburn and acid reflux and even aids in weight loss.

Use it externally by washing your face, and then dab with a cotton ball dipped in apple cider vinegar. Leave it overnight and in the morning rinse it off. You can also take it internally by adding two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of raw honey to a glass of water. Drink it before breakfast, lunch, and dinner to see the results.

7.6)Tomato Juice

Tomato juice is also a great option to control excessive sweating. It helps tighten the pores and can reduce sweat. Eat tomatoes in a salad or drink a glass of tomato juice. You can also apply tomato juice to your face for 10 minutes every day to see better results.

7.7) Green And Black Tea

Green tea contains magnesium and Vitamin B, which reduces the size of your sweat glands. Black tea, on the other hand, contains tannic acid which has both antiperspirant and astringent properties. Both teas help constrict the sweat glands and control the flow of sweat.

Just brew a cup of black tea or green tea for 10-15 minutes and let it cool down a bit. Dip a clean cotton pad into the tea, and dab the tea on your face. Repeat this method regularly.

7.8) Cornstarch And Baking Soda

Cornstarch and baking soda have water-absorbing properties. Baking soda even acts as a natural deodorant. The alkaline nature of baking soda helps neutralises the acidic sweaty area on which the bacterias thrive. In fact, many commercially available deodorants use baking soda as an ingredient.

To use it, combine a half-cup of cornstarch, a half-cup of baking soda, and 2 to 3 drops of lavender essential oil. Clean your face and then apply this mixture on your face. Allow it to dry and then rinse off.

7.9) Wheatgrass Juice

Wheatgrass juice is rich in vitamin A, C, B12, B6, and folic acid. Drinking a tablespoon of wheatgrass juice daily will help reduce sweat by neutralising and diluting the toxins in the blood.

7.10) Potato

Too much sodium in the body causes water retention. Potato due to its high potassium content helps to push out the excess water retained in the body. Potatoes also have water absorbing properties and hence they can help get rid of extra sweat. Other potassium-rich foods like broccoli also have a similar effect. Simply rub a potato slice on your face for a few minutes daily to experience the drying effects.

7.11) Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is also an astringent and fights sweat-causing bacteria. Soak a cotton ball in tea tree oil, and apply on your face for a few minutes before washing it off. You will see the results in a few days.

7.12) Sage

Sage taken in either tea or pill form can reduce sweating. Sage has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that help restrict the growth of bacteria that can lead to excess sweating. Sage leaves also contain tannic acid just like black tea.

7.13) Witch Hazel

Witch hazel contains compounds such as tannins, catechins, gallic acid, and flavonoids, as well as essential oils like carvacrol, hexanol, and eugenol, saponins, and choline. All of these compounds together help shrink the skin pores and is especially effective for facial sweating.

Dip a cotton ball in witch hazel and apply a thin layer on your face. Rinse it after 30 minutes.

7.14) Aloe Vera Juice or Gel

Aloe vera is another soothing, cooling agent and also helps regulate excessive sweating. Apply the gel or juice on your face for 30 minutes regularly.

Bottomline

Your problem may be a hereditary issue or may be due to stress, the reason why this problem occurs is still unknown and even though there is no cure there are a number of treatments to control hyperhidrosis varying from prescribed antiperspirant to botox treatments. If you experience a severe condition consult a doctor first.
